It was 1946, the war was won, rationing was over, and Americans were ready to get out, spend some money, and enjoy life again. If only they had a decent shirt to wear!

A “shortage of shirts—dress, business, and sport—is an annoyance that is likely to plague the American consumer for months to come,” wrote Barron’s on Oct. 14, 1946.
